WASHINGTON D.C. -- October 1, 2005 --
The Washington Marina announced today the substantial completion of the marina's western parking area, which had been closed for renovations since February, 2005. Marina General Manager, Bob Stickell said, "It's been a long road and we've waited almost five years for these much-needed improvements and we are excited to having a fully-improved, safe and modern parking area for our customers."
The Washington Marina Company, a small family-owned boating business, is in its fifty-fifth year of operation and it leases federally-owned property which is managed by the District's Dept. of Housing and Community Development, DC DHCD.
"We have increased our parking capacity by about 30 percent" said Stickell. In addition, Stickell noted that the west area now has a stormwater management system installed to help control stormwater runoff as well an access control system for safety.
Improvements for the marina property, also known as "Yacht Basin One,” were funded by the 104th and 107th Congress. "Yacht Basin One" was the District's first model marina and was established by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1938.
