Yacht Basin One - Parking Renovations

WASHINGTON D.C. -- February 21, 2005 -- Long awaited renovations of The Washington Marina's west parking area began today said Marina General Manager, Bob Stickell. "We've waited over four years for these much-needed improvements and we are really looking forward to having a fully-improved, modern parking area for our customers.

The Washington Marina Company, a small family-owned boating business, is in its fifty-third year of operation and it leases federally-owned property which is managed by the District's Dept. of Housing and Community Development, DC DHCD.

"We negotiated a long-term lease in late 2001 and have been waiting for these much-needed parking renovations" said Stickell. "Most Marina's in the Washington, DC Metro area have a ratio of at least 2 parking spaces for every 3 boat slips or more. Our current ratio is about 1 parking space for every 2.5 boat slips so we are at a real disadvantage." Once the west area renovations are complete, we will pick up about 25 more spaces."

In addition, Stickell noted that the west area will soon have a stormwater management system installed to help control stormwater runoff. "Any waterfront facility should have a stormwater management system implemented and we are no exception." "However," he states, in 1939 when this facility was constructed, there was little of no concern for environmental issues like this."

Improvements for the marina property, also known as "Yacht Basin One,” were funded by the 104th and 107th Congress. "Yacht Basin One" was the District's first model marina and was established by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1938.
