Washington Marina signs Green Marina Pledge

WASHINGTON D.C. -- April 18, 2003 -- The Washington Marina Company announced today that it has signed and submitted a pledge to become a "Green Marina" in the District of Columbia. The Green Marina Program is a joint effort of the National Park Service, National Capital Region (NPS-NCR) and the District of Columbia Department of Health (Environmental Health Administration).

The purpose of the Green Marina Program is to establish a voluntary program that serves and supports marinas and boatyards along navigable waters of the District of Columbia and encourages marina and boatyard operators to take further steps to protect the District's environment.

Bob Stickell Jr., president of The Washington Marina, stated that the Green Marina initiative establishes a voluntary public/private partnership to help clean up and to protect the waters of Washington D.C. Since the program is voluntary, it encourages true participation for marinas, boatyards, live-aboards, recreational and commercial boaters, and related service providers to adopt environmentally sound practices that will contribute to clean boating.

"The Green Marina Program should reduce our cost of operations and attract responsible boaters to our facility" stated Mr. Stickell. "We're very excited about the short and long-term benefits of the Green Marina Program and we are committed to actively pursuing full standing as a Green Marina."

Stickell added, "With the ongoing renovations to The Washington Marina facility, it is a perfect opportunity to implement appropriate pollution prevention and best management practices of the Green Marina initiative with the ongoing efforts to revitalize The Washington Marina."
