In 1938, by Presidential Order, President Franklin D. Roosevelt
declared that the nation's capital needed a "first class" marina to
meet the needs of recreational boaters. "Yacht Basin One" was established as the result of this presidential order. President Roosevelt commissioned Charles Chaney, the Philadelphia Harbor engineer to design and supervise the construction of "Yacht Basin One". Between 1939 and 1941,"Yacht Basin One" (now known as The Washington Marina) was constructed on federal land by Works Progress Administration (WPA). During the period 1941 to 1951, "Yacht Basin One" was leased to four different businesses all of which failed to operate the marina successfully. In 1951, the District of Columbia government contacted Mr. C.M. Stickell, owner of Stickell Marine in Baltimore, and asked him to take over operation of "Yacht Basin One." Mr. Stickell agreed and on September 1, 1951, The Washington Marina Company began operations. Commercial History: The Washington Marina Co. maintains one of the largest inventories of marine engine parts and accessories in the country. For the past forty-seven years, it has supplied parts and accessories and provided service to the general public as well as to the U. S. Government, all branches of the Armed Forces, numerous State and local government agencies including Police and Fire Rescue/EMS departments. The Washington Marina also is a supplier of marine parts and accessories to numerous friendly foreign governments. A variety of boats, including the famous "Marina Rocket" (a twenty-eight foot plywood vessel), were designed and built entirely on location at the Marina's premises. The three Stickell brothers, Bill, Richard and Bob all worked together at the marina with their father, Clarence. Bob Stickell took over as President of The Washington Marina in 1958 and was then succeeded by his son, Bob, in 1997. |
